We know it can be difficult, especially during these big annual events to keep the environment in mind so we have collected our favourite ideas together.
Only use natural materials
Plastics and other man-made materials such as polyester clothes fibres can be very damaging especially when burnt, not to mention it is illegal to burn many substances such as oil and rubber. Keep this in mind whilst making your Guy Fawkes – use natural fibre clothing, straw and untreated wood to produce the models. Not only will this be better for the environment but it will also help to protect the health of those around you and will result in a much brighter, more satisfying flame!
Fireworks an often damage the environment through the release of harmful toxins that they contain and the remains of the fireworks that fall to the ground. The good news is that ‘green’ fireworks do exist! These contain less dangerous chemicals and produce less waste once they have been used. Low noise fireworks are also available from many retailers which help local wildlife and pets from becoming highly distressed during this busy night.
Watch out for animals
Many animals such as hedgehogs and birds seek refuge and shelter in log piles. Without careful checking of bonfires these animals could be harmed once they have been lit. To minimise this bonfires should be made close to the time of burning as possible.
Most importantly, enjoy this bright and colourful celebration!
