Winter Mindfulness

We know that winter can be a drag – it’s too long and too cold and too sad – but we’re here to show you how to enjoy the winter with a little help from Mindfulness.

Notice the seasons changing.

Look at the world around you – how has it changed over the last few weeks? Notice the beautiful lines made by the bare branches of a tree, the reflections cast in water now silver and blue where they used to be green and brown. Pay attention to the sounds, from the crispiness of frost under your feet to the shrill singing of robins and blackbirds in bushes, trees and back gardens. See the people – how they draw their coats around them against the chilling air, bundled in scarves and hats and gloves. See also the rebels, wearing only hoodies and jumpers, defiant against the cold skies and the tugging wind, hands shoved deep into pockets and ears tucked below collars.

Enjoy the warmth of a hot drink on a cold day.

Pay attention to how it steams the air, the way the swirling patterns stretch and shimmer as you blow gently across the liquid’s surface. Notice the first, scalding mouthful, how the warmth spreads swiftly though your body, how the surprise of it has made you forget the cold already. Feel the hot cup in your hands and take note of the aromas as you drink and your body warms. Remember to appreciate that feeling of warmth, to savour it as soon the drink shall be gone and the cold will creep in once more. Enjoy the rich colours within the cup and remember to take a deep breath.

Enjoy the darker evenings.

See the lights inside the buildings, from sparkling lines of Christmas bulbs to a simple lamp on a living room table. Let the warmth of that image fill your mind and enjoy the contrast between this and the wintry air. Cozy up in the evenings, lighting candles and enjoying their scents with a huge blanket and your favourite book. Feel the weight of it in your hands as you sit back, quietly aware of the peace filling the room and the little pocket of warmth you have created in the cold of winter.

Remember that with a little mindfulness and due care and attention you will start noticing all the beauty in the world around you. No matter the season, come rain or shine Planet Earth and all the lives it supports are complex and gorgeous in their own way. We need only look for the light.

How to secretly measure jewellery sizes

That time of year is coming again and many of us will buy a ring or a bracelet for our loved ones this year. The burning question, however, is this – will it fit? Here’s a few tips on secretly measuring them to keep it a surprise come Christmas morning.

Get ahead of the game

Ask them if you can take their measurements outright – just do it in advance. The more time between asking and receiving, the better, giving them plenty of time to forget. Do it in a busy moment and tell them it’s for a school project or that your friend is doing a research paper on the correlation between age and wrist size. If it’s for a ring, be sure to pick a specific finger, preferably one you’ve seen them wear rings on before to ensure that your gift will be enjoyed to the fullest.

Compare wrist and hand sizes

Sit down for a coffee with your bestie and ask them to compare their hand size to yours. Though this won’t give you an exact number, you’ll be able to see if they require bigger or smaller sizes than you. It may even lead smoothly into a conversation about specific sizes!

Borrow their favourite jewellery and measure it

This is a surefire way to get an accurate measurement for your jewellery. Admire what they’re wearing and ask if you can borrow it for a particular event. Take a piece of string and coil it carefully around the inside of a ring or bangle, or if measuring a bracelet open it up and lay it along a ruler. If you are short for time, draw around the inside with a pen on some paper and measure it later.

Enlist the help of others

Ask a mutual friend to get them alone and ask them what size jewellery they wear. Get your friend to take note then pass the information to you. Your special someone might be suspicious but they’ll be looking in completely the wrong direction, saving the surprise for when you give it to them! You could also prepare a group of friends for this task and have everyone discuss their jewellery sizes, making it look like a normal, everyday conversation.

Buy adjustable

Failing all else, keep your back covered by finding a beautiful piece of adjustable jewellery for your loved one. This takes out all the guess work and it’s perfect for a long distance friend who you don’t get the chance to see every day and probe with questions. A lot of adjustable jewellery designs nowadays use this to their advantage, creating beautifully fluid and ergonomic designs that will leave them breathless. They will result in the perfect fit no matter the size, making for comfortable jewellery that she will never want to take off.

We hope this helped! Don’t forget to look outside the box when asking people for their ring sizes (“let’s make plaster molds of our hands!”) and most of all stay calm. Remember that even if they find out what you’re buying them, they will still love it to pieces as soon as they see it.
